The new issue of Canadian zine and culture magazine Broken Pencil contains an email exchange between me and Canadian queer video artist Mathew Thomas. The issue’s general theme is on expatriate artists — Canadian artists who chose to live and work outside of Canada. Since leaving Canada in 2001, I have lived and worked in both Japan and the United States, and they put me into contact with Mathew, a young artist who is both tempted by the opportunities living in American might afford, while being somewhat ambivalent about the prospect for political and cultural reasons. The resulting exchange turned out to be kind of interesting, I think, and thematically mirrors a 10 page comic I did for the upcoming issue of SHIRTLIFTER about my experiences moving to the States.
The issue is available in finer magazine and bookshops, but they have also posted an excerpt from our exchange online at the Broken Pencil Website.
