I would bet that the store was Jim Hanley’s Universe. They’re one of the most gay friendly comics shops in the country.
Glad you were able to get a copy of Number #1. It’s getting hard to find.

Not related : we were in New york for a week with the boyfriend, and I managed to complete my shirtlifter collection.
I’ve found issue number 1 in a comic book store near the empire state building. They had many gay comics, and a good selection of books and paperbacks.
